DIGITAL ADDS TO PRODUCT LEADERSHIP
FOR PCI FAST ETHERNET CONTROLLERS
...New 21140A PCI Fast Ethernet Chip Gains Features, Performance...
MAYNARD, Mass., September 18, 1995 -- Digital Equipment Corporation
today announced a new version of its PCI Fast Ethernet controller
chip to link computers that use the Peripheral Component
Interconnect (PCI) bus to high-speed local area networks. The
21140A PCI Fast Ethernet controller offers new boot ROM memory
support, full PCI V2.1 compliance, a new power management feature,
improved performance, and full pin compatibility with the current
21140 chip.
"Digital Semiconductor was the first PCI Ethernet chip vendor
in the open market and is a leader in 100 megabit-per-second (Mbps)
solutions for PCI-based systems," said William N. Johnson, vice
president, Sales and Marketing for Digital Semiconductor, a Digital
Equipment Corporation business. "With the improvements in our
second PCI Fast Ethernet product, we are helping network interface
card (NIC) and system manufacturers to drive down the cost of
high-speed networking for customers."
Both the 21140A and the 21140 chips provide cost-effective
upgrade paths to 100BaseT networks for 10Mbps PCI Ethernet
installations. The devices support internetworking applications
such as Ethernet switching, bridges, and routers that require
connection to Fast Ethernet.
New Features
The 21140A chip's new features include:
o Boot ROM support for loading of remote code that enables
NIC and system suppliers to include vendor- and application-
specific differentiation;
o A register function for subvendor identification code, in
conformity with the PCI V2.1 specification;
o Power management with sleep and snooze modes.
An improved descriptor interrupt scheme improves chip performance
and throughput.
The 21140A chip is a 10Mbps/100Mbps dual-port, full-duplex
controller that supports both 3.3-volt and 5-volt signals. Large,
on-chip FIFO memories avoid the need for external buffers, and the
DMA architecture saves CPU cycles for other tasks. The 21140A chip
offers the same unified set of software drivers as the 21140,
supporting NetWare, LANmanager, Windows NT, Windows 95, MS-DOS,
OS/2, SCO UNIX, PATHWORKS, Digital UNIX, OpenVMS, and other
environments. The 100Mbps port contains a complete media
independent interface (MII) to support voice-grade, data-grade,
shielded twisted pair, and unshielded twisted pair cabling in any
TX or T4 installation.
Price, Availability
The 21140A PCI Fast Ethernet controller is priced at $23.30 in
quantities of 5,000. Samples will be available in October and
volume production is planned for January 1996. Evaluation kits,
containing a PCI Ethernet evaluation board, sample drivers,
schematics, and documentation, will be available this December.
