SHLIBDIR := /somewhere Like Baptiste said, this was just to buy time to prevent people from getting trashed as a result of doing an installworld when running zfs. It's more than just ZFS, but that's the most visible failure mode. The failure is that the zfs libraries and libnvpair get installed into /usr/lib, but the /sbin zfs binaries use the ones from /lib. Depending on the age of the now-stale copies in /lib, you get undefined symbols.
