Well, I don't think that an 8-bit gaming console was capable to do
800x600x16bit. And don't forget that gaming consoles are not equial to
general-purpose computers - they do many things in bare hardware
(sprites, music etc.).

I had some experiance with how "fast" Java on the same machine is,
so I was really surprised with Python's performance in this particular
case.
