In the ancient past (what, 6 weeks ago ;) the JDK was compiled against
LessTif, which caused most AWT programs to behave erratically.  This was
fixed in a prior release, and the current release also follows this
practice.

This is mentioned in the README.FreeBSD distributed with the JDK, and
also would be apparent if you downloaded it and tried it out on your
applet. :)
