TIMTOWTDI, one can just pass everything from MAKE_ENV MAKE_ARGS= ${MAKE_ENV} LIBDIR= ${DATADIR} It has slight advantage of proper quoting, e.g. when ${CC} contains distcc/ccache + compiler separated by space.
