I have been running ntpd on FreeBSD 2.x thru 7.x without problems so I suspect it's something in your configuration. What does your 'ntp.conf' contain? What does 'ntpdc -p -c kerni -c loopi -c sysi -c syss' give you? >openntpd in the base system. It seems to be very simple. And it works.
