Normally I would second that but IMHO portupgrade(1) is dangerous in a way that it is a fine bandaid for the flaws in the current implementation of the package system. There is no urge for the developers to address these issues because "we have portupgrade". I do not fight a religious war against portupgrade(1), I use it myself. But I wish I would not have to. That is my point. > Personally, I've never seen what was so difficult about managing package > updates, but then again, I'm not overly concerned about updating the > dependency lists when I do it by hand. You are able to do so. I am probably too if I wanted to. But think of the people who just start using FreeBSD. Let them install packages at their will for a year and they will have rendered their package db unusable. Personally I think it rather unprofessional to tell them on -questions or -stable "hey, do not rely on our tools, use portupgrade instead". Remember, one of our marketing arguments is the ports collection. And honestly, I have better things to do than repairing a package database by hand, especially when it comes to things like Gnome or KDE. As I said before: Before thinking about new package formats, the current issues should be addressed. Just my 2 Euro cents from a users perspective. -- Thomas Seck To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-arch" in the body of the message
