No, you're about right.  It's worth bearing in mind however that at
least some of the peripheral manufacturers aren't all that *happy* about
the situation; many don't enjoy being blatantly manipulated, and many
more find it annoying that their product's performance is determined
(and often destroyed) by someone _else's_ software.
