now my personal comment:
As mentioned above our -stable machines were upgraded over the last 
weekend. The transition was much more smooth than expected (regarding
the all the hassles reported on the mailing list).

OK. This time I 'really' made sure that 'installworld' had run
without any suspicious errors or warnings and that the fresh
kernel was _really_ in the right place.
