It is ABSOLUTELY CRITICAL in many recovery situations that you be able to run with only ONE partition mountable (and even that mountable read-only). I cannot COUNT the number of times that I'd have had to reinstall if I could not do things like set up a new disk with only a read-only bootable root slice. 2. I don't care how cluttered "/" is; I never go there unless I'm doing maintenance.
