I've been using samba3 for a long time on this particular machine, with a configuration that's very close to the sample configuration (default security, default passdb backend) and hasn't changed in a very long time.
The recent update to 3.0.23 broke all my 'regular' shares (non-guest-ok, limited to a specific user), I cannot access them from neither Windows clients nor other unix machines or even on the server machine itself with smbclient.
I've tried the smb.config.sample that is installed by the port verbatim except for one added share definition and that does not work either. Reverting to samba 3.0.22 restores expected behaviour (both with my own configuration and the sample configuration).
Note that guest-ok shares and the [homes] special share continue to work fine.

Install samba 3.0.23, mv smb.conf.sample to smb.conf, add one share like this:
[share]
comment = Sample share
path = /tmp
valid users = lofi # Set this to an existing unix user with
# a valid smbpasswd entry who can access /tmp.
public = no
writeable = yes
Try to access this share with smbclient.
