Too late.  POSIX.1 just (well, last year) standardized the broken interface.

It's amazing how many mouldy interfaces POSIX.1-2001 has compared with
POSIX.1-1990 (1988?).  The corresponding problem for write(2) was fixed
soon after `const' was standardized.
