My experience has been that when going from a system that accepts long
usernames to short usernames the username just gets truncated by the
destination machine.

You can check this out by doing things like:

rlogin some8usernamehost -l eightchr_SEE_IT_GOT_TRUNCATED

You will have problems going the otherway :-(.
