Hi,
I had exactly the same issue and solved modifying xorg.conf with this:
1) add
Option "PreferredMode" "1600x900"
to your "Monitor" section
2) make sure you have
SubSection "Display"
Viewport 0 0
Depth 24
Modes "1600x900"
EndSubSection
in your "Screen" section.
