I'd definitely move the motd junk to The problem with moving the "motd junk" to /etc/rc is that the motd should be a local entity. Otherwise it defeats the entire purpose of the Message Of The Day, turning what was intended to be a default into a standard. This change will force anyone who actually DOES change their motd from the default into putting local changes in /etc/rc.
