The log entry beginning:
>(II) RADEON(0): Validating modes on Primary head ---------
>(II) RADEON(0): TMDS PLL from BIOS: 16500 b011c
>(II) RADEON(0): Panel infos found from DDC detailed: 1280x1024
>(II) RADEON(0): Valid Mode from Detailed timing table: 1280x1024
>(II) RADEON(0): Valid Mode from standard timing table: 1280x1024

looks like the output reported when X.org finds a builtin LCD panel.
I think there's a reference later to combining two monitors and my
X.org log explicitly talks about only finding one monitor and
automatically disabling MergeFB.

Anyway, I'm glad you found a solution to your problem.
