When I was in the navy, we used to float test(*) this sort of damage. (*) Float test - advanced diagnotic method. Throw the equipment over the side. If it floats, it's useful. This saved us enormous amounts of wasted time trying to recover stuff that was BER(+). (+) Beyond economic Repair. In short - head crashed disks are useful only as bricks or boat anchors.
