While I'm not quite sure what you mean by "invisable edges", but I'm guessing you want a GIF with transparency. If so, ImageMagick can do it, although the syntax can be tricky. ImageMagick supports LOTS of APIs including Java, C, Perl, and probably several others. (Of course, there is also command-line.)
