Didn't help in my box:
===>  Building package for rsync-2.5.5_1
Creating package /usr/ports/net/rsync/rsync-2.5.5_1.tbz
Registering depends:.
Creating bzip'd tar ball in '/usr/ports/net/rsync/rsync-2.5.5_1.tbz'

4$ grep SUFFIX /etc/make.conf 
PKG_SUFFIX=.tgz
