One reason is that '.' isn't ${.CURDIR} except in the degenerate case where
${.OBJDIR} is ${.CURDIR}. '.' is ${.OBJDIR}.

I find that it helps grokking the necessary -I's :-). It's very easy to
confuse '.' with ${.CURDIR} if you don't think about it.
