That's exactly what I do on my PWS 500a with adaptec controller. I stuffed an 
1GB IDE drive in it too boot off (/, /var & /tmp are on this disk) and 
everything else is on a 4GB and a 9GB SCSI disks. FreeBSD identifies the 
adaptec controller at boot - you just need something to boot off from.
