My 2cents, Granted I have not tried it with 4.X, but I have successfully done a binary upgrade from 2.6 to 3.X many times with no problem. I think the guideline to do the backup for safety sake and then a binary upgrade would fit the bill nicely. This way if it works you will have the best of both worlds. If you chose this route I would also like to know the results.
