I recently went through the same ordeal. The deal here is that you have to have a JVM already installed on your system in order to install OpenJDK. Effectively, then, the installation of java/openjdk6 is a two step process: first you install the java/diablo-jdk16 port by downloading and installing the relevant package from freebsdfoundation.org, and then you subsequently install java/openjdk6. Afterwards, obviously, you have to change your PATH variable so that you invoke the newer openjdk6 by default. I could have sworn that java/openjdk6 tells you this when you try to build the port though. Agree that there could be more thorough documentation around this.home | help
