What version of freebsd are you using?  There was a tuning bug in the
bktr driver that was fixed in -current a couple of months ago, but was
only recently merged into -stable.  I have a patch for mplayer 0.92
that works around it, but I doubt it will apply cleanly to the version
currently in ports.
