Isn't it that you tried to build it from a port, while it is a binary package? What tarball do you have: jdk1.1.8_ELF.V1999-11-9.tar.gz or jdk-1.1.8.tgz? If the latter, pkg_add at the dir where you have the tarball. Your apology, if I misunderstood you.
