Have you tried a "source upgrade"?

Basically:

 	cd /usr/src
	cvsup stable-supfile.cvsup
	make buildworld && installworld

Then you might want to upgrade the /etc/ directory and maybe make a new
kernel if you have upgraded a big amount.

I do this once a month in my /etc/monthly script.
