I found a work-around by forcefully installing GNOME AFTERWARDS, i.e first install KDE and complete the FBSD installation process. then 1. mount the instllation cd 2. Go to Gnome directory in the CD and type pkg_add -f gnome-1.4.... The -f forces the installation. Ignore the error message 3. add exec gnome-session to .xinitrc 4. startx and enjoy !
