If 'twere the kernel, would it not happen with
every one using xl(4)?  I'd suspect the driver/chipset
combo first, IIRC there are a couple different chipset
for the 3Coms.  And hundreds of chipsets on every
mobo in the world

But, could be kernel-related, I guess ... ;-)
