Everything appears to be fine with the box, it was running NT with these drives up until about 3 weeks ago. I managed to appropriate it, since our environment is moving to WIN2K, and wanted to make mail server out of it.
I *think* that FreeBSD is waiting for the drives to do something and it is timing out waiting, but I don't know what is going on (I am not a *nix guru by any stretch of the imagination.)
