If you really made no changes to your hardware then this is odd. I compiled and installed 4.4-STABLE yesterday without problems (cvsupped and compiled it on a Pentium machine that just previously had been set up with a new hard disk and 4.4-RELEASE). Anyway, I'd still recommend having a look for probable causes of the problems on the haredware side...
