You'd normally create a separate /var filesystem for this sort of stuff.
I'd recommend symlinking the whole of /var to somewhere else. You don't
want too much writing on the root filesystem because if there are problems
it's more likely to get corrupted -- then you /are/ in trouble.

You might also consider replacing your qpopper daemon with the imapd one.
It won't save any space, but it seems to work better :)
