I tried with Acroread 4, gv and xpdf: they all failed to open the book.
For example:

% xpdf book.pdf
Error (0): PDF file is damaged - attempting to reconstruct xref table...
Error: Couldn't find trailer dictionary
Error: Couldn't read xref table

The file is corrupted/damaged.
