Interesting. I can see if the Compaq BIOS will let me disable it - though
I have a feeling it only lets me disable resource allocation, and that
prevents BSD booting at all (dont quote me on that, I just have a vague memory
of trying it when I first got the machine).
I can try it when I get backfrom Amsterdam next week and will let you know,
