CUPS may have its quirks and rough edges, but AFAICT it's *the* printing spooler/filter/... solution for Desktop users. None of the predecessors were anywhere close WRT end user flexibility and transparency. Perhaps we should assist in filing down the rough edges rather than wasting time in killing one of the bigger achievements in the Unix world and wantonly depriving ourselves of Desktop printing. I'd support to ask maintainers to add missing WITHOUT_CUPS=yes support so you can stuff it into /etc/make.conf for servers that aren't concerned with printing, but for Desktop-related ports the default needs to remain "use CUPS".
