Just log in as 'root' with no password. after logging in give root a
password by typeing:

passwd

and follow the instructions (if you care to).

You should also create a new user (adduser) with password and log in as
that in the future. use root only for administrative task (which you can
access with 'su' and give roots password - be very afraid)
