My experience is on a Pentium 166 unbranded laptop which currently has
Linux installed. The machine cannot boot from CD so I have wrote the
floppies from the images in the 4.3RC3 iso. Upon booting the install
disks, FreeBSD recognises the CD rom drive as a Toshiba CD-ROM XM-1602B at
ata1-master using BIOSPIO.

After selecting everything i want installing, the installer runs newfs on
all my slices, then comes to install the distributions. This is where I
run into problems.

I have attempted exactly the same process several times, and each time I
get different results. I've tried to section them below to make it less
ugly and more readeable, hope it makes sense.

-------------

Sometimes I get the following messagebox:

| The CD looks more like an audio CD than a FreeBSD CD.
(at which point the install terminates)

-------------

Other times I get:

| A signal 11 was caught... etc
(the alt-f2 log shows success in mounting the CD here)

------------------

However, if a PCMCIA network card is installed (A D-Link DE660), the
following always occurs, can sometimes also occur without the net card:

(again, the alt-f2 log shows success in mounting the CD)
| Warning: The CD currently in the drive is either not a FreeBSD
| CD or it is an older (pre 2.1.5) FreeBSD CD which does not
| have a version number on it. Do you wish to use this CD anyway?

Selecting 'yes' results in (for each distribution):

| Write failure on transfer! (wrote -1 bytes of 240640 bytes)

and then eventually

| Cannot parse information file for the info distribution: I/O error
| Please verify that your media is valid and try again.

The debug log (alt-f2) reads:

/stand/cpio: premature end of archive
/stand/gunzip: failed gzclose
/stand/cpio: premature end of archive
/stand/gunzip: failed gzclose
RRIP without PX field?
/stand/cpio: premature end of archive
/stand/gunzip: failed gzclose

-----------

Anyone can help? I'm going to re-download the ISO (if I can find it - it
seems to have disappeared from some FTP sites) and write a different CD
soon, but it reads fine under Windows, the current install Linux on the
same laptop (suggesting the CD rom drive is fine), and in other freeBSD
boxes. Note that in all cases, enabling extra debugging gives no further
information.

Tomorrow I should be able to attempt to install via ftp (assuming I can
get my 3com PCMCIA net card working...)

Thanks in advance,

Gavin Atkinson
