When I installed a second CD drive (a CDRW) recently, I had to spring a
lousy $5 bucks or so for that audio cable, but I hear the digital cable
method is the *best* especially for DVDs and true sound...

I would guess `man pcm` might lead you on the right path.  Also try
enabling the proper module (change NO to YES) in /boot/loader.conf
