As part of my "FreeBSD-backs-up-to-Linux-over-the-network" script, it starts out by doing an "ls -l > /devicelist" before the actual backup starts... Not really pretty, but it does save the important (but not all) info about /dev... One of these days, I'll make it so that the backup script creates a shell script with a bunch of mknod's in it instead...
