Kerneld was already configured correctly.  I was unaware it is necessary to 
MAKEDEV sndX again after switching sound cards.  Found the problem, thanks to 
the group.  The es1373 works fine now.  Documentation for sound is severely 
lacking in the man's, the Handbook & the mailing lists.
