Thank you -- the magic has been discovered! ;-) I had never heard of mdmfs(8) until now (mdconfig(8) sure, mdmfs(8) nope). Looking at the source, this thing is just a "fancy wrapper" written in C, using mdconfig(8) and newfs(8), as well as geom_uzip(4) (which I also didn't know about until now) in some manner (not sure how that fits into the puzzle).
