Just thought i'd add that the patch described in PR 24443 works here
too.

Just in case anyone's remotely interested, the symptoms here where:

CPUTYPE=i686:	breaks
CPUTYPE=k7:	works
no CPUTYPE=:	works

After the patch:

CPUTYPE=i686:	works
CPUTYPE=k7:	works
no CPUTYPE=:	not tested

The error message from MAKEDEV all was:
| MAKEDEV: arith: syntax error: à…†È…à…é…ë…î…†"
| 
| bad node: mknod i4bteld1
