Your patch not work since there is no 'nm' in /bin:/usr/bin hardcoded
in first line of the script.

I expect lots of problems with GNU Configure scripts (for ports), they
never search nm,ar,ranlib in .../aout
We must provide symlinks from
/usr/bin/xxx -> /usr/libexec/{elf or aout}/xxx
otherwise lots of ports will be broken.

Not reading expected but writing too (f.e. ranlib and ar), so allowing
reading not helps much.
