Novices (like me) should run FreeBSD 4.8. I have the same cheap piece of junk for a sound card and amazingly it works with FreeBSD 4.8. I just built pcm into the kernel, load the module (snd_cmi_load=3D"YES" ) in /boot/loader.conf and there is music.
