Another thing to try is on the windows side, try adding the printer as a
local printer.

XP steps:
1) Add printer
2) Local printer (uncheck auto detect) -> Next
3) Create a new port
4) Dialog comes up.  Type in server/printer name (\\fileserver\Printer)
5) Select printer driver.

Click through to finish.
