Short RECAP: I couldn't get perl5.003 to compile on FreeBSD2.1.7 (the 2.2 port wouldn't work, nor would the .tar.gz file from CPAN). The solution: There was a time.h file in my /usr/local/include (from a library of time manipulation routines). When I excluded it, the compile worked without a hitch. Whip!
