Actually bullet two here is due to shortcomings in bsd.kmod.mk. Until very recently, one had to have the module in the kernel tree in order to build it. Well, no longer. Simply define SYSDIR and you can build from anywhere in the tree. BTW, Where would a kernel module go in the current ports hierarchy?
