"geli list" shows that is uses software crypto (non-accelerated).

You should load aesni.ko as your CPU supports it then refer to dmesg output=
 to
see what encryption modes are accelerated with your hardware and use
accelerated mode for GELI container. Then re-do your performance tests and
report back.
