For what its worth, I was able to get it working, though for the
life of me I couldn't tell you exactly what I did, or the version
numbers.

Hmm... I know that you can build freewais with or without soundex
matching, so there is a clue: check whether or not you built
freewais with soundex matching.  If not, try adding it.
