Sound works fine for me with GNOME 2.24.  I have:

FreeBSD Audio Driver (newpcm: 32bit 2007061600/i386)
Installed devices:
pcm0: <HDA Sigmatel STAC9220 PCM #0 Analog> at cad 0 nid 1 on hdac0 kld
snd_hda [MPSAFE] (1p:8v/1r:1v channels duplex default)

I know there were some HDA changes done in RELENG_7 recently.  Perhaps
they are causing your sound problem.  You didn't mention your FreeBSD
version, so I don't know.
