Thanks for the tip, but I can't seem to do the same explicit
definition on FreeBSD.  A setting of anything other than
":0.0" does not allow me to connect to the X server at all.

I tried turning off DRI and that did not help either.

I have this problem with NetBSD -current and the workaround there is
to set your DISPLAY environment variable to "localhost:0.0" .  It seems
there is some problem talking directly with the X server I guess.  Anyway,
I've no idea if that will fix it, but your symptoms sound the same.
